1. Start with calendar dates
Both the date of birth and the reference date are treated as calendar dates (year, month, day) without a time component. Calculations use UTC midnight to avoid daylight-saving or timezone shifts — so 14 March stays 14 March everywhere. This is the core of any calculate age from date of birth method.
2. Years, then months, then days
The age calculation formula counts:
- Completed years — difference in years, adjusted if the birthday hasn’t occurred yet this year.
- Completed months — remaining months after years, borrowing 12 months if negative.
- Remaining days — days after months, borrowing the exact days in the previous month of the reference date if needed.
Example
Born 10 June 2000, calculated on 14 March 2026 → 25 years, 9 months, 4 days.
June→March borrows 1 year and uses February’s 28 days.
3. Leap years matter
A leap year adds February 29. The tool knows every month’s length and whether a year is a leap year (year % 4 === 0 && year % 100 !== 0 || year % 400 === 0). So someone born on 15 February 2020 turns 1 year, 0 months, 13 days on 28 February 2021 — not 1 month and 0 days. This is why a simple calculate age by dividing days fails.
4. February 29 birthdays
People born on February 29 are considered to have a birthday on February 28 in non-leap years (the common celebration date). That keeps the next-birthday countdown stable: Feb 29, 2000 → next birthday on Feb 28, 2025 is 0 or 365 days away depending on the reference. Try it in the birthday calculator or main age calculator.
5. Month-end dates
Borrowing uses the previous month of the reference date. Example: DOB 31 January 2000 to 28 February 2001 uses January’s 31 days when borrowing, yielding 1 year, 0 months, 28 days — not 1 month and –3 days. You can test this with the date difference calculator.
6. Calendar age vs. elapsed duration
We document the assumption: elapsed hours/minutes/seconds are derived from total calendar days (UTC midnight difference). Time-of-day isn’t collected, so we don’t guess hours.
Why not just divide by 365?
Dividing total days by 365 (or 365.25) gives an approximate decimal age but loses calendar meaning. It treats every year as the same length and every month as ~30.4 days. Real calendars don’t. That’s why two people both “25.3 years” can have different month/day counts.
