What this birthday countdown calculator does

This birthday countdown tool shows both your next and previous birthdays relative to today (your local date at the moment you calculate). If your birthday is today, the next birthday calculator reads 0 days and the progress bar is full with a celebration message. For people born on February 29, the birthday is treated as February 28 in common years — that matches how most people celebrate and keeps the days until birthday count accurate without skipping a year. It’s the easiest way to answer “when is my next birthday?” without counting on a calendar.

How to use the birthday calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth — pick day, month and year. The day menu adapts to month length (for example February shows 28 or 29 options depending on year).
  2. Press Calculate Birthday. Today is already used as the reference — there is no extra date to pick, unlike the main age calculator which lets you choose any reference date.
  3. Read your results in the cards below: next birthday date & weekday, days remaining and progress, previous birthday, current age, zodiac and weekday born.
  4. Try variations. Use Reset to clear and recalculate, or switch to the date difference calculator for a span between two arbitrary dates.

How it calculates your next birthday

The formula is deliberately simple and calendar-accurate:

  • If birthday this year is today: days remaining = 0, progress 100%, celebration message.
  • If birthday this year is still ahead: next birthday = that date this year; days remaining = UTC midnight difference between that date and today.
  • If birthday this year has passed: next birthday = same month/day next year. Again, whole calendar days at UTC midnight — no daylight-saving quirks.
  • Progress bar: elapsed days since your previous birthday divided by total days from previous to next birthday, rounded to a percent.

February 29 special case: birthdayInYear(year) = (month===2 && day===29 && !isLeapYear(year) ? Feb 28 : Feb 29). That keeps February 29 birthdays on February 28 in common years, which is how the how it works guide documents it. Current age in years/months/days uses the same borrowing logic as the age calculator — years, then months, then days with real month lengths.

Worked example

Example

Born 15 August 1998. Today is 22 August 2026.

  • Current age: 28 years, 0 months, 7 days (birthday this year was 7 days ago)
  • Previous birthday: 15 August 2026 — Friday
  • Next birthday: 15 August 2027 — Sunday — 358 days remaining
  • Progress: ~2% (7 / 365)
  • Zodiac: Leo (Jul 23 – Aug 22), born on Saturday

February 29 example

Born 29 February 2000. Today is 22 August 2026 (non-leap year).

Next birthday appears as 28 February 2027, not 2028 — so the countdown is ~190 days, not 500+. Previous birthday was 28 February 2026. In leap year 2028 it will be shown exactly as 29 February.

Understanding your inputs

  • Day / Month / Year: calendar date of birth without time. Time-of-day isn’t asked because weekday and age are calendar-based at UTC midnight — a common disclosure on how age is calculated.
  • No reference date: unlike the age calculator’s “Calculate Age At”, this tool always uses today — keeping it focused on “days until birthday.” For a past/future age, use the main age calculator and set any reference date.
  • Local storage: your last birth date is saved as agecalc:birthday so revisiting restores it. Reset clears it.

Understanding your results

  • Next birthday & days remaining: the exact next occurrence and whole days left (0 if today). The progress bar shows how far you are between previous and next birthday.
  • Previous birthday: useful for “when was my last birthday?” and for the progress denominator.
  • Current age (years, months, days): same calendar age logic as the main tool — not just total days ÷ 365. See the difference on calendar vs. elapsed.
  • Zodiac sign & range: Western tropical zodiac by month/day (e.g., Leo ♌ Jul 23 – Aug 22). Symbolic, not scientific.
  • Born on (weekday): weekday of your birth date at UTC, with a date summary for verification.
  • Stats — total days / total months / next in: total days lived = today minus birth date at UTC midnight; total months = years×12 + months; next in = short form of days remaining.

Tips, assumptions & limitations

  • Assumes Gregorian calendar and February 28 for Feb 29 in common years — documented, not hidden.
  • Whole calendar days at UTC midnight — hours/minutes aren’t used, so daylight saving cannot shift the countdown by one.
  • Time-of-day ignored: someone born at 23:50 and someone at 00:10 the same date share the same next-birthday result.
  • Future birth dates rejected: if you enter a birth date after today you’ll see “Date of birth cannot be in the future” instead of a negative countdown.
  • Privacy: dates stay in your browser and optional localStorage — nothing is sent to a server for the countdown (see privacy policy).

Frequently asked questions

How many days until my birthday?

Enter your birth date above — the next-birthday card shows days remaining. It counts from today to the next occurrence at UTC midnight; today shows 0.

What happens on my birthday?

You’ll see “Today is your birthday!” with a full progress bar and “Today” in the “Next in” stat. Your age increments that day (born 15 Aug 1998 → 28 years exactly on 15 Aug 2026).

Can I calculate age for a past or future date?

Use the main age calculator and set “Calculate Age At” to any date — past or future. For a span between two dates, use date difference.
